2026 World Cup qualifiers: 'Expectations are high for the Black Stars' – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has acknowledged that expectations are high for the Black Stars to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Speaking after the draw, Africa’s top scorer in the history of the FIFA World Cup admitted that Ghana’s qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup is undoubtedly tough.

Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances of securing a spot in the tournament, which is scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

“It looks like we are getting used to the World Cup. 2026 is not going to be easy because the expecation is high back home but we will try our possible best to make sure we also qualify.”

Gyan, alongside other African football icons, had the privilege of participating in the draw held in Ivory Coast on Thursday. Notably, Gyan was responsible for selecting the group in which Ghana will compete.

In the forthcoming qualifiers, Ghana will find themselves battling it out in Group I against formidable opponents such as Mali, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Comoros, Chad, and Mali once again.
