The 2017 American superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is based on the Guardians of the Galaxy superhero team from Marvel Comics.

James Gunn decided to explore the characters’ new identities as Guardians and continue the Quill’s father plot from the first movie by setting the sequel soon after. Russell, who played Ego, a change from Quill’s comic book father, was officially announced as Quill’s father in July 2016.

Phase Three of the MCU saw the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017, after its Tokyo premiere on April 10, 2017.

It outperformed its predecessor and earned more over $863 million globally, ranking it as the eighth-highest-grossing movie of 2017.

Though some reviews thought the picture was inferior to the original, the visuals, directing, soundtrack, humour, and acting won accolades.

At the 90th Academy Awards, it was nominated for Best Visual Effects. A Disney+ special titled The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was released in November 2022 and will be followed by a sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, on May 5, 2023.
